Our History
Mansfield Hockey Club was first founded as a mixed team in 1950 as St. Marks Hockey Club, after the church in Mansfield that some of the founding members belonged to. There were 12 founding members of the club, including John Ford, David Wallace, Colin Seymour, and Peter Jelley, the latter of which was even organist and choirmaster for the church.These members subsequently turned St. Marks Hockey Club into the Mansfield Hockey Club we know and love today!
Over the years, we have played our home matches at various grounds throughout the Mansfield and Ashfield Districts, including at Mansfield Racecourse, “The Quarry”, Sutton Lawn, Goosedale, Hucknall National School, and our current ground at Kingsway Park.
The club has grown steadily from its roots of a 12 player mixed side in its humble beginnings to its peak in 1989, where we amassed over 100 members in the club across 5 Men’s teams, 2 Women’s teams, a Junior setup, and numerous weekday teams competing in nationally organised competitions. This continued on into the 2000s where our Men’s 1st XI came within goal difference of winning the Midlands Premier Division and subsequently being promoted to National League.
After a brief lull in membership, the club has since experienced a renaissance over the last 5 years, with the club now fielding 5 Men’s teams, membership steadily increasing every year, gaining Clubmark status, and experiencing healthy relationships with our affiliates in Ashfield Aztecs Ladies, and Mansfield Aztecs Junior Hockey Clubs. We now aim to build on our recent growth by attracting new members by continuing to provide low cost hockey in the Mansfield and Ashfield area!
